If you are a fan of Mad Men, you must purchase The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook. Even if you are not a fan of the show (gasp..get started, it is good), you will still like the recipes found in this cookbook. Judy Gelman and Peter Zheutlin are the authors of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook and it includes delicious recipes that include the culinary world of the Man Men-era circa New York. This book is sure to please cooking fans and will provide up delicious recipes for the holiday season.
The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook serves up 70 recipes, along with commentary on the food/drinks seen on Men Men. Some examples include a gazpacho soup like the one Betty would have served at her Around the World Dinner, to the steak tartar Don ordered at Sardi’s while flirting with Bobbi Barret, to the whiskey sour Don and Lane enjoyed at the Playboy Club.
It is packed with period detail such as Why is Joan’s choice of a Blue Hawaii on New Year’s so era-appropriate or How did the avocado become popular in America in the sixties? What about the reason Jackie Kennedy increased a specific fruit’s visibility? The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook provides invaluable historical and cultural context, tips on throwing a successful 60’s cocktail party and a guide to favored Mad Men hangouts that will appeal to history buffs and fans planning Mad-Men inspired diner parties.
The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook includes a full color 16-page insert with photos of the food from the recipes inside, plus additional black and white photos, food-related advertising material, and other images from the 1960’s. It also includes recipes from the bars and restaurants that appear on the show.
I really enjoyed all sections of the book. They have some fabulous appetizers, salads, and entrees. I think the drink section was my favorite, as I learned how to make so many interesting drinks for my next party. I also loved learning about new desserts to make-Yum!
