Sometimes, I wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Why? Because my 7 month-old woke me up early or my daughter is throwing a tantrum at 7 AM. I start the day sulking and in a rotten mood. Then I take a step back and realize how lucky I am in my life and feel bad for my tumultuous attitude. I should feel blessed – I have a comfortable bed to sleep in nightly and am able to provide nutritious food to my kids everyday. I grew up with an extensive education and was offered the opportunity to be a dentist today. I am able to go to work and make a living for my children.
While I know many people are afforded these basic luxuries, please know, that many are not. It is not a secret that people in third world countries have to struggle with the basic necessities for survival, including food and water. However, did you know that many young children in these third world countries, like Africa, are dropping out of school daily. One of the main reasons is the coming of age of these girls and the arrival of their period.
The girls in these under developed countries simply cannot afford the basic luxury items such as pads and tampons. When faced with the new issue of getting their period and not being able to afford the medical necessities, these girls abandon school and increases their vulnerability to poverty and disease, including increased HIV. Because of the simple rite of passage of getting their periods (which seems so everyday to us), they have to feel embarrassed by not having the means to get medical necessities such as pads/tampons. They end of not getting their education because of their period. How sad!
This makes me extremely uncomfortable and I want to show you what I did to help. I simply joined the o.b’s Share It Forward Campaign. o.b. is hoping to raise $25,000 for Huru International which provides Huru kits to at-risk girls at no cost. Each Huru kit comes packaged in a drawstring bag that doubles as a backpack and includes eight reusable sanitary pads, three pairs of underwear, detergent soap to wash the pads, a waterproof bag to store the pads, educational insert on proper usage, as well as important life-saving HIV/AIDS information.
The o.b. brand hopes to raise $25,000 for Huru International which will translate to 1,000 Huru kits (or 8,000 reusable pads) valued at $25 each. For every user who shares this important message about Huru’s important mission, o.b. will donate $1 to Huru’s important cause.

I can definitely relate. We don't have a lot of money to spend on things we don't really *need* and I worry about not being able to eat out, etc. I never have to worry about such simple things as feminine hygiene products!
Thanks for sharing this! I hope they get to $25,000. That would be so fantastic!

Thanks for posting about this, Melissa! I've often wondered about girls going through this in underprivileged countries. How sad that they have to stop going to school because they're embarrassed and don't have the items that we take advantage of all the time. 🙁 I am going right now to their facebook page.
This is a great cause!
