If you have not heard of NMEDA before, it stands for National Mobility Equipment Dealer Association. NMEDA is a non-profit trade association of mobility equipment dealers, manufacturers, driver rehabilitation specialists, other professionals dedicated to expanding opportunities for people with disabilities to drive or be transported in vehicles that are equipped with mobility devices and equipment. All members work together to improve the life of people with disabilites by allowing them to be able to get from one place to the next.
NMEDA was originally founded as an association of mobility equipment dealers in the State of Florida. In 1989, membership opened at a nationlevel and the NMEDA was found. The organization supports and funds individual members engaged in the modification of quality transporation for people with disabilities. Membership has grown to 600 people with the bulk living in the United States and Canada.
All members of the NMEDA are required to adhere to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and to follow the guidelines set by the NMEDA. Every member agrees to follow these guidelines when they join the NMEDA. The documents which contain information about the recommended practices of equipment mobility safety are signed yearly.
The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) is a recognized accreditation program for mobility equipment. The program was created to provide safety, quality, and reliability within the industry. Some states now require participation in the QAP to work for the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs. It is the only program developed for the mobility equipment industry. A QAP designation enhances vehicle safety and provides correct standards in putting in mobility equipment. THAT is my DREAM!
I’ve been in a wheelchair for 7 years and can’t go out in my power chair with my family since we can’t get it in the car. I have to take buses everywhere to meet them. It’s also a problem in a medical emergency when I have to take public transit to the hospital since I can’t call 911 or get a ride and bring my wheelchair. 🙁
I”m hoping next year to get a modified vehicle through voc rehab though!
