*I am receiving an all expense paid trip thanks to Disney. All my opinions are my own and not swayed by outside sources.*
The email came in a few weeks back that I will be returning to LA June 20-22nd for #TheBFGEvent. At first I was screaming and then Hayley was screaming for me because she read the BFG this past year and it is one of her favorite books! This absolutely AWESOME book by Roald Dahl is going to be a Disney movie and what better person to direct it other than the world renowned Steven Spielberg. I can’t even begin to tell you how EXCITED I am for this trip! You can follow along on my twitter handle @dentistmel, Facebook, and Instagram @mommychronicles from June 20 (YES this Monday)- June 22 to learn more!!
While we are in LA we are going to walk the red carpet, watch the movie and interview Ruby Barnhill (“Sophie”), Jemaine Clement (“Fleshlumpeater”), Penelope Wilton (“The Queen”), recent Academy Award winner Mark Rylance (“The BFG”) and Director Steven Spielberg!
From someone who was honored enough to walk the red carpet a few months back, I can tell you this is a dream coming true again and I am so grateful! There is nothing quite like being on a red carpet for what I heard will be the greatest Disney movie this year! They are calling The BFG the new ET of our generation! The reviews are simply AMAZING so far and I will be there to bring you the latest and greatest.
We will also join Disney XD for a special screening event of the upcoming animated series “Future-Worm!,” which is created and executive produced by Emmy Award-winner Ryan Quincy (“South Park”) and premieres later this summer. “Future-Worm!” is an offbeat comedy adventure that follows Danny, an optimistic 12-year-old who creates a time machine lunch box and befriends Future Worm, a fearless worm from the future with titanium-enforced abs. This will take place the morning of Wednesday, June 22 at the Disney Toon Studios. Follow along with the hashtag #FutureWormEvent to learn more!
We are also going to see Queen of Katwe! Lupita Nyong’O actually touched upon this movie at The Jungle Book Event and she is so proud of how this film came out! I CAN’T WAIT!
“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs
to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Directed by Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”) from a screenplay by William Wheeler (“The Hoax”) based on the book by Tim Crothers, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher (“The Darjeeling Limited”) and John Carls (“Where the Wild Things Are”) with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo (“Selma”), Oscar® winner and Tony Award® nominee Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.
For 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) and her family, life in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle. Her mother, Harriet (Nyong’o), is fiercely determined to take care of her family and works tirelessly selling vegetables in the market to make sure her children are fed and have a roof over their heads. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling. She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family. Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” will open in U.S. theaters on September 23, 2016.
So as you can see our agenda is quite full and I am so happy to be bringing it all to you! Stay tuned for so much more and be sure to mark July 1st in your calendar because that is the date The BFG is coming out in theaters!
