***I received an all expense paid trip thanks to Disney and ABC studios. All my opinions are my own and not swayed by outside sources. I received a DVD to give away from the PR firm representing Disney.*
Last month, I had the opportunity to screen the brand new Disney Channel movie, The Descendants which debuts tonight July 31 at 8 PM EST. I have to say that from the minute I sat down to this movie, I loved every single of it. It is a movie that not only the kids will love, but the adults will be dancing and singing along too. Of course, this movie is made by the fabulous Kenny Ortega, the main director behind High School Music, so you know this movie will be great! Along with a stellar cast and an incredible plot, this will be the summer movie that everyone will be taking about.
The Descendants focuses on the villains of the Disney movies and their kids or “descendants”. You will see all the great Disney villains such as Maleficient, Cruella de Vil, Jafar, and more! The main focus revolves around Ben (the son of Belle and the Beauty from Beauty in the Beast) who is poised to take the throne. However his first act is to offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella de Vil, Maleficent the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters.
In enters, the Descendants or the offsprings of the villains (Carlos, Mal, Evie and Jay) who are then allowed to leave the Island of Lost (where the villains live) to be given a chance to attend a prep school where all the Disney heroes live including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. At this point when they enter they feel like outcasts from the others and have to decide whether to live their lives as heroes or go back to living “rotten to the core”.
Upon existing the island, they are given directions from their villainous parents to steal the Godmother’s magic wand to make everything evil in both of their worlds. Mal (Maleficient’s offspring) pretends to fall for the prince to gain more access to the heroes world and to complete the task of getting the magic wand once and for all.
However, things change when Mal decides that she truly falls in love with the prince and has to then make a decision whether all the villainous children should live their lives continuing on as villains or become the heroes, living their life good. The evil teens face the main dilemma whether they should follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?
The cast of this fabulous movie includes:
Kristin Chenoweth (“Wicked,” TV’s “Glee”) as Maleficent
Dove Cameron (TV’s “Liv & Maddie”) as Mal the daughter of Maleficent
Wendy Raquel Robinson(“The Game,” “Miss Congeniality”)as Cruella de Vil
Cameron Boyce (TV’s “Jessie”) as Carlos the son of Cruella de Vil
Maz Jobrani (“The Interpreter,” “13 Going on 30”)as Jafar
Booboo Stewart (“X-Men Days of Future Past,” “Twilight”)as Jay the son of Jafar
Kathy Nijimy (“WALL-E,” “SisterAct”)as the Evil Queen
Sofia Carson (TV’s “Austin & Ally”) as Evie the daughter of the Evil Queen
Mitchell Hope (“Down the Way,” “Yes Mum”)as Ben the son of Beast and Belle
Melanie Paxson (“Saving Mr. Banks,” “Happy Family”)as Fairy Godmother
Brenna D’Amicoas Jane the daughter of Fairy Godmother
Sarah Jeffery (“Shades of Blue,” “Rogue”)as Audrey the daughter of Princess Aurora
Zachary Gibson (“Zapped”)as Doug the son of Dopey
Jedidiah Goodacre (“If There Be Thorns,” “Zapped”)as Chad Charming the son of Cinderella
Dianne Doan (“Last Night in Suburbia”)as Lonnie the daughter of Mulan
Without giving away too many spoilers, I will say that this is one movie you will want your kids to see. I think the important plot of deciding whether they should change to good or stay “rotten to the core” will resonate with a lot of children, especially with the early teenager stages. The end result will definitely appeal to both parents and children. It is a feel good movie with good messages and a wonderful plot.
Along with the unbelievably good storyline, the dancing and acting is stellar. All the songs in this movie are so catchy and the dance numbers directed under Kenny Ortega are phenomenal. Don’t blame me though if you have the songs caught in your head for quite some time, like I do! I warned you!
