I am so excited because The Sleepover is now available to stream on Netflix. If you are looking for a great family movie, this is the movie for you. As a mom of three kids who have various interests, it is hard to find a movie we all agree on, let alone like. We have gone through countless movies through the Pandemic where Zane and Hayley like it, only to have Taylor dislike it. However, this was certainly not the case with the new movie, The Sleepover. As a family we absolutely loved this movie from start to finish. Seeing my kids laugh for most of the 100 minute movie brought huge smiles to my husband and I. It is a movie that is perfect for all family members and it is a great escape from the reality we are all living in now.
As you saw in my press interviews, this movie revolves around comedy which appealed to us all. In addition, you have the element of action which was truly top notch! The story starts out being introduced to Clancy and Kevin and the dynamics of their family. They seem to be living a regular family life with the constant bickering that goes on, seen in one seen where Margot does not allow Clancy to have a phone. The movie continues on where Kevin invites his friend, Lewis, to sleep over and in true Ken Marino fashion, he brings all the comedy, where he tells them to sleep outside in the tent.
Cue the start of trouble! Clancy is on a mission to escape her parents and sneak out to go a friend’s party. While saying goodbye to Kevin and Lewis, the action really starts where Margot and Ron have unexpected visitors. Margot appears to have been a thief in a past life, where she is let go of these charges by enrolling in the witness protection agency, unbeknownst to her husband. The criminals show up to her house and kidnap both Ron and Margot. We find out Margot not only leads an unusual lifestyle in the past, but her real name is Matilda.
The kids find out about this and they are led on the expedition of their life trying to free their parents. As the kids are searching, the parents are being told to participate in another heist to steal a precious crown. The action scenes take place throughout them trying to steal the crown, along with the kids adventures of trying to reach their parents. There are some amazing scenes (which are filmed in Boston) where they are on the harbor and taking a boat in very cold water. Another favorite scene of mine is the “vomit” scene involving Ken! You know how funny Ken is, so let’s leave it your imagination how wild this scene was to watch! I laughed and laughed some more, while being somewhat grossed out.
This movie has it all! Of course the subject matter is not likely, but this does not stop the movie from being thoroughly enjoyable with lots of laugh out loud moments. Watching with my kids of various ages, I loved seeing how strong this family was and how they truly got together to help each other out. While I thought this movie would end one way, there is a surprise at the end that I did not see coming. This moving is touching, wacky, light, funny, and perfect family entertainment. I would give this movie a 4/5 stars.
