A healthy smile is the gateway to overall health. Healthy teeth and gums are directly related to overall health. Healthy teeth and gums are an important part of overall health. Unhealthy mouths
can be uncomfortable and can interfere with eating the foods you enjoy. If you don’t feel good about your smile, it can make it difficult to fully take part in life.
As an ADA dentist, I make it my job to ensure my patients have the best, healthiest smiles possible. When I was a dental student at the University School of Dental Medicine, I treated the worst-case scenarios when dealing with my patients. I have done everything from a simple filling, to a complex extraction, to a full-mouth denture. I knew in life after I graduated, I never wanted anyone to have to suffer with an unhealthy mouth. Today, I make it my mission to ensure each and every patient has a healthy smile. That’s why I want to share some tips with you on how to ensure a healthy smile this holiday season.
A Healthy Smile in the Face of Unhealthy Foods
When the holidays roll around, healthy eating goes right out the window. I’m under no illusions about that because I can get pretty loose with my diet this time of year, as well. That being said, there are some way to ensure you keep that healthy smile while enjoying the holiday season.
General Tips for a Healthy Smile
As you’ve probably heard a hundred times before from your dentist, be sure to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and clean between your teeth daily. I also recommend mouthwash to help kill any bacteria that brushing and flossing may miss (talk to your dentist about which rinse would be right for you). And, as always, you’ll want to see your dentist regularly for a routine cleaning and checkup to ensure that a healthy smile is the only smile you have. One important tip to note is always buying oral healthcare products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This Seal tells you that the product you buy is the best of the best. In my office, I follow the strict ADA guidelines and adhere to all the latest dental recommendations from the ADA.
Holiday Tips for a Healthy Smile
The holiday season is one of indulgence, but while you’re indulging, you should take steps to protect your teeth and gums. These tips can help you ensure you keep your family’s smiles healthy through the holidays.
- Opt for chocolate instead of hard candy in stockings. Chocolate is easier to clean off of the teeth than hard candy. Hard candy can also damage teeth.
- Ditch candy altogether and use small toys for stocking stuffers instead.
- When you or your children eat candy, limit the amount.
