Reduce Breast Cancer Risk with Changes to Yourself and Your Products
Scientist, physicians, and community partners in the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP), which is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), study the effects of environmental exposures on breast cancer risk later in life. They created a mother-daughter toolkit mothers can use to talk to daughters about steps to take together to reduce risk.
The environmental exposures studied have been linked to breast cancer later in life. Fortunately, these exposures can be limited or eliminated altogether now to immediately reduce breast cancer risk for you and your daughter now and in the future.
Reduce or Eliminate Exposure to Phthalates
Phthalates are found in some detergents, storage containers, toys, and personal care items like fragrances, nail polish, deodorants, hair care, and body lotions. Look for items and products that are phthalate-free.
Reduce of Eliminate Exposure to BPA
BPA is a chemical found in some plastic bottles and containers and in the lining of some cans.
Make Healthy Choices
Healthier choices now reduce breast cancer risk later in life. Choose fragrance-free products whenever possible and limit your exposure to chemicals in plastic products by cooking, serving, and storing foods in glass containers. Opt for glass containers rather than plastic when microwaving foods, and avoid using plastic wrap when you use the microwave.
In addition, replace heavily processed products like white bread with whole grain options and add beans and fresh fruits and vegetables rather than canned ones to you and your children’s diets. Stay away from foods with a high animal fat content, as well.

As for me, I am sure going to help spread the word on this. My best friend’s mom got diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years back and I am happy to report she has been cancer free the last 5 years. It was such a journey to watch her go through this but she is a fighter, and now a survivor!!!
