Have you all seen Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2?! If not, you must go see it and do not read this post until you have done so, since there is spoilers. So it is not everyday where I get to interview my favorite character in Guardians, Yondu! He was my favorite character in the first and was in the second one as well. So be forewarned that there are some sad scenes if you love him as much as I do in the movie! Yondu is awesome and interviewing the actor who plays him, Michael Rooker was equally awesome. Combine that with interviewing Kraglin, played by Sean Gunn, and it was simply one of my favorite interviews.
My Interview with Michael Rooker (“Yondu”) &
He was so funny when he walked in and was appreciative of being there. He was so comfortable and willing to answer any of our questions.
Question 1: Can you talk about the when you learned that you were going to die in the script? SPOILER ALERT…SPOILER ALERT..SPOILER ALERT..
He told us he is used to dying. He has dyed in many different movies and TV shows, and laughed that it did not hurt at all.
Question 2: How important was it for you to have redemption for Yondu?
He told us that it wasn’t important for him at all. It didn’t bother him at all.
Question 3: Can you tell us about the makeup process?
He told us that he loved the makeup.
“We have a makeup artist in this room that was part of the makeup. Awesome makeup process. It took about, maybe a three hour process to put on and four or five, six layers of different shades of blue and gold and silver and yellow, flax and all kinds of stuff. And I’m like, what color is this? It’s gold, and then they sometimes just flick it on with a brush. They put it on the brush and they just go and they just flick it and it’s like little spackling all over your face, but tiny little dots that helps to bring out the depth of the paint so it looks like, it just looks like real skin and I mean, it feels like real skin, too
Question 4: How was it working with the teeth?
Michael told us it was hard and took a lot to get used to. Sean Gunn told us that the teeth can be very trick. It took Sean a few months to really get used to it. He said the teeth was one of the most difficult parts.
“The teeth are up in the front, so I form my words and my consonants and sounds more back, so it didn’t’ bother me at all with the speaking. What it did do, was it’s very difficult for the whistle. A whistle’s all in the front right where the teeth are We got to fix these because I got to whistle. And so they did. They did pretty good and I had to relearn a little bit of where I focus. Where I focus the sound for the whistling and stuff.”
Question 5: Is it your whistle or do they enhance it?
He said it is his whistle but they enhance it.
Question 6: What is your favorite character besides your own and why?
Sean told us he likes them all but Dave Bautista would be his favorite. Michael said he also likes them all but his favorite is Rocket and Baby Groot.
Michael then told us it is hard to pinpoint because it is a heavy CGI movie and it is like five movies in one. He joked that he better get a hell of a lot more money if the does this again. Then he joked he will never be hired again for saying that. LOLOL!
Question 7: What has it been like to transition from a behind the scenes character to an onscreen character?
“To the first point about working with my brother, we’ve been working together in various capacities since we were little. I have an easier time working with him than just about anybody because we have such a shorthand for communicating with one another and I know for the most part, what he’s looking for. I have a pretty good feel for what he’s going for. And so I think that we work together really, really well. I’m certainly grateful that he gave me such a nice role in this film.”- Sean Gunn
He also loved that he did not have a ton of makeup or have to really get dressed up.
Question 8: Do you see the potential of expanding Yondu’s back story into its own movie and would you like to be a part of that?
” Well, any kind of extension and of Yondu would be good. I wouldn’t mind that at all. I’m used to the makeup. I’m used to the character. I already know it.”
Question 9: What was it like on set filming the death scene?
He told us it is emotional for everyone but him! He was mostly sleeping doing it!
