Sleep tips. I needed them. I don’t know about you, but I occasionally have a difficult time falling asleep. Even when I’m tired, I sometimes still lie in bed for a solid half hour before I finally find sleep. As a busy mom of three, blogger, and dentist, that’s not good. I need solid healthy sleep. Here are some sleep tips I’ve been using to get healthy sleep. They’re working for me, and I hope they’ll work for you, as well.
Sleep Tips to Help You Get Healthy, Restorative Sleep
We all need sleep. But all sleep is not created equal. Did you know that there’s a difference between sleep and healthy sleep? Lots of factors go into it. Did you go through all five REM cycles? Did you fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes of turning the lights off? Did you wake up feeling refreshed without hitting the snooze button? If you’re like me, you answered no to most of those. That’s why I’m making an effort to get myself into a better sleep cycle by following the sleep tips below.
Step Away from the Computer
The bulk of my blog work is done in the afternoon and evenings. Some nights, I’ll go straight from the computer to the bed. That’s not a good way to get myself ready for sleep. The light from the monitor and the mental stimulation limits by body’s ability to produce melatonin, a natural sleep hormone. Because I haven’t produced enough melatonin, when I lie down, I’m still wired. I’m making a concerted effort to be sure I’m always off the computer at least a half hour before bed.
Exercise
Exercise is key to healthy sleep. Exercise helps everything from your metabolism to your energy levels. It also helps your body produce the right amount of hormones and chemical required to regulate your sleep cycle. I’ve been exercising more and more, but I’m resolving to exercise every day to help my body get back into a healthy sleep rhythm.
A Healthy Diet
Like exercise, a healthy diet can prime your body for healthy sleep. Think about the last time you ate a big, greasy something. You wanted to take a nap, didn’t you? That’s bad! That unhealthy food drains your energy, throws your body out of whack, and wreaks havoc on your sleep rhythm. I’m opting for leaner proteins, complex carbs, more veggies and fruits, and smaller portions.
All-Natural Sleep Aids
I know it’s important for me to follow these sleep tips, but for those times when I haven’t followed the sleep tips like I should, I keep all-natural sleep aids as a back up. Rather than grabbing something that uses a man-made chemical to knock me out, I reach for Natrol Melatonin products. They naturally increase my body’s melatnonin levels to help me fall asleep without introducing any foreign chemicals into my body.
